There are an estimated 800–1000 wild or free-roaming horses in the Chilcotin, and about 200 truly wild and genetically distinct horses in the Brittany Triangle area, from where the Nemiah people have caught and trained them for centuries. No one knows exactly how or when the horses first arrived but historical and DNA evidence suggest they made their way here well before the first European explorers did.

Photo: Olesya Nickolaeva | Stranded on Vodny Island in 1948 when construction of a reservoir flooded the area, this herd is believed to be the largest and longest lived wild population of horses in Russia. 12km long and 3.5km wide, the Island has not a single tree or bush, and is surrounded by the saline waters of the Manych-Gudilo Reservoir. In 1995, the Rostov Nature Reserve was created, including Vodny Island. (source: "The Marooned Mustangs of Manych", UK Daily Mail, 11 July 2013).

Photo: Therese Hubner | Sweden's oldest horse breed, the Gotland Russ. Wild russ, which once roamed all Gotland, nearly disappeared by early 20th century. To preserve the breed, Lojsta heath was set aside. The Lojsta herd is the closest you can get to a herd of wild horses in Sweden. Far from boxes, saddles and blankets, foals are born, live and die in 650 hectares of forest paddocks. Never standing inside a stable, they shelter in Lojsta heath’s dense forests.
