This is the eastern larch or tamarack (Larix laricina). This tree has many amazing properties, but here are two. First, you won’t see any of these green needles outside right now. Though it’s a member of the pine family, the eastern larch drops its needles in the fall and grows new ones in the spring. Second, you can use this tree to split your geek friends generationally. The older ones probably laughed as soon as they saw its name, and will be repeating it over and over. The Larch. The. Larch. Old Ones, Foraging, See It, Just Amazing, Forests

Now that there’s snow pretty much everywhere, keep an eye out for snow fleas (Hypogastrura nivicola), which inexplicably hop around on snow. These tiny critters are not fleas at all, and they aren’t even insects; they belong to a special group called Collembola. They boing into the air by releasing a tail-like appendage called a furcula that’s under pressure. Think wee soot sprites on springs.
