The prickly pear is one of the most common cactus species in the Dallas Fort Worth area. The flowers will become the deep purple fruit later in the season. The skin of the fruit appears deceptively smooth, but it is actually covered in tiny needles that are nearly impossible to remove from the hand. Yes, I am sure of this.
