'The Lovers', (1928)- René Magritte Magritte is a Belgian artist who's art is created to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. Although the artist has never stated the meaning behind the painting himself, some believe it provokes the idea that even people who are as close as lovers may not truly know each other.

The exhibition The Magritte Machine at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is the first retrospective on René Magritte (1898-1967) to be held in Madrid since the event organised by the Fundación Juan March in 1989.

Comprised of some 250 works, the show was presented by period in thirteen "chapters" ranging from Magritte's early Surrealist paintings, to his Post-War experiments and kitschy période vache ("cow period"), to his late Empire of Light series -- united throughout by green apples, veils, and the ubiquitous gentlemen in bowler hats ... with or without heads underneath.
