LDR 30 Day Q&A Challenge

Day 1 – What are your names, and ages, and where are you both from? Anabel, age 22, from New York; Coltin, age 24, from Oklahoma Day 2 – How far is your distance, and what’s the time difference? 1648 miles from Maryland to Colorado, USA with a 2 hour time difference Day 3 – How did you meet? Online, on tinder when he was stationed in Washington DC Day 4 – How long have you been together? Just over a year Day 5 – What was your first impression of your partner? My first impression was that our differences, in how we grew up and otherwise, made him so interesting to talk to. We never ran out of things to talk about and I loved hearing about life growing up in Oklahoma and his current life in the military. I just had this feeling about him and ran with it; I had to talk him into meeting up for our first date and it was one of the best decisions I have made. Day 6 – How did you tell your family and friends about your LDR? We were dating in person before we went long distance. I told my dad on the phone, he spread the word some until I made an official facebook post which told any friends that I had not already spoken to in person or by text. He knew he was pcs-ing so myself and others knew early on our relationship would either end or become a ldr. Day 7 – What is your favourite physical feature of each other? He likes my hair and I his blue-green eyes Day 8 – What are your favourite pictures of one another? It is really hard to pick just one but I love the expressions on our faces in this one Day 9 – Give us 4 random facts about your partner? He plays music in the shower, has five siblings, can get a perfect score on a PT test, made me have to learn not only military lingo but also midwestern/oklahoman lingo as he uses them in everyday speech Day 10 – What hobbies and interests do you two have in common? We both love outdoor activities and being adventurous. Hiking is one of our favorite activities to do together and he introduced me to riding ATVs Day 11 – What’s the most favourite thing/gift you’ve given each other? The above photo was part of a photoshoot gift he gave me before going long distance. I also have been writing open when letters for him that he loves Day 12 – What means of communication do you use the most? We text and call mostly Day 13 – Share a cute memory that you have together. We spent an afternoon going to wine tastings with some of his friends and were going back to one of their places to continue the fun. He had more to drink than I did so I drove us both in his car. It was the first time he had ever let anyone else drive a car of his and told me about buying his first pick up truck. The entire day was one I will never forget but it felt special that he trusted me enough to drive his car. Day 14 – Do you have a song? We don't officially have a song but I listen to 'In case you didn't know' by Brett Young and/or 'Yours' by Russell Dickerson before I get off the plane when I go see him. We have very different tastes in music except for country Day 15 – What was your first kiss like? If you haven’t kissed yet, what do you think it will be like? Our first kiss was on our first date/the first time I met him. We met at Starbucks and were there for a good two hours. It even started drizzling but we stayed, neither of us ready to say goodbye yet. Eventually we went back to his place, cooked dinner together and kissed watching a movie. Day 16 – What are both of your dream careers, and how do you think your LDR will affect them? I think we are both figuring that out right now; I just graduated college and am looking into mental health careers while he is leaving the military and looking to go to school. I think going from ldr to living together is going to be a huge transition for us both but I think the hardest part is figuring out all the logistics of moving in together while we are apart Day 17 – When did you both first say “I love you”? If you haven’t tet, when and how do you think it will happen? I said 'I love you' first; about two weeks into our relationship, I was going home to NY for a visit and on our last time together before I left, I told him no pressure to say it back but I wanted to say it before leaving. He was already shaking his head as I was explaining no pressure and responded 'I love you too' without the slightest hesitation. Day 18 – How often do you have a phone or video call, and what’s the longest phone or video call you’ve ever had? It varies depending on his work schedule and he isn't the best at communicating to begin with so I would say for most of our long distance, we would talk on the phone every week to week and a half. We text every day but don't tend to carry a conversation that way. Our longest call has been 3 hours and we have had a handful of skype date nights where we watch movies together so that would be much longer. Day 19 – If you could go anywhere in the world together, where would it be and why? My first instinct is to say anywhere we are together but other than that, I'd love for him to meet more of my friends and family as the people in my life are the most important things to me. We have met quite a few of each others' friends and families, though I've definitely met more of his than him mine. Day 20 – Have you made any plans for the future? If so, are there any you care to share? Yes! We are planning on moving in together very soon! I am so excited for us to start the next chapter of our lives after what has been one of the hardest year in both our lives. Day 21 – Do you plan on getting any pets together? If so, which ones? No pets in our current plan tho I am a dog lover and would love to get one eventually Day 22 – How do you deal with arguments in your relationship? Because he can be kinda hard to get a hold of, I usually text him very long complaints and frustrations to which he usually responds to promptly and then we will discuss next time we talk on the phone. Day 23 – When is your next visit planned for? If you don’t know, how long do you hope it’ll be until your next visit? I plan to fly out to see him in a few weeks as a final visit before moving in to hash out some logistics, especially with me moving cross country Day 24 – Do you play any games together? If so, which ones? not really Day 25 – What are you most excited to experience together in the future? He was actually born in Texas, raised in OK, but visited family in TX frequently, so I am so excited for him to introduce the culture to me. Other than that, growing and experiencing new milestones together. Day 26 – What is the most important aspect of a relationship to you? Communication and remembering the little things are the most important parts of a relationship to me. While he may not be great with communication long distance, he is good in person and always checks in throughout the day when at work if I am visiting. He can handle serious conversations and knows how to lighten the mood afterwards. One day while I was visiting, we passed these beautiful hydrangeas in the store and I mentioned how there was a huge one in my yard growing up. The next day, he comes home from work with one of the hydrangeas. Day 27 – What do you think is the hardest thing about an LDR? A very common answer but definitely missing out on each others lives. Especially without talking conversationally every day, there is just so much in our daily lives we miss out on. Countless times I would think of wanting to tell him about something I saw or did but wasn't big enough to actually mention when we did talk. Day 28 – What do you think are important qualities for people to have in an LDR? Lots and lots of trust and faith that it will work out. Neither of us are particularly religious but I have learned so much about trust and faith in each other and in the relationship over the past months we have been apart. You have to be a certain kind of strong; long distance isn't for everyone and if it isn't for you, that is totally ok. It is far from easy but can be done. Day 29 – What are some positive impacts you feel distance has had on your relationship? You begin to value the little things more; the good morning texts, the facebook post tags, the moments you do have together. You learn how strong your love is and what it can withstand. You learn what lengths you are willing to go to for the relationship to work, especially when you spend $400 in flights to only have a few days together. Some things just don't have a price tag. Day 30 – What advice would you give to other couples in LDRs? Be honest about how your feeling, even when its hard. Trust and support each other and have a plan to close the distance eventually but be flexible should that plan need to change. Not everyone is going to understand your relationship or get the hardships you go through and that's ok. Find support with ones that do and use social media to make new friends who will support you every step of the way. Find the challenge here
