By any measure, Lakewood Center’s half-mile-long mall, anchored by its signature department stores, entered the decade of the 1960s as a remarkable success. In 1964, on the tenth anniversary of Lakewood’s cityhood, a Los Angeles Times headline read: “Lakewood Heads Growth Rate for Los Angeles County Cities,” noting a 14 percent growth in commercial development, much of it at Lakewood Center. The mall had become a new kind of downtown, just as its developers had envisioned.

Lakewood was one of the first suburban developments to attract buyers with a street of completely furnished and landscaped model homes.
