The Queen of Nothing ~ Folk of the Air Trilogy by Holly Black - Review

Wow, Holly Black did it again. The Queen of Nothing is the third and final book in Black's Folk of the Air Trilogy. Preceded by The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King. The series also contains a novella: The Lost Sisters. I read the first two books of the series at the end of last year and the beginning of this year. Black got me hooked and I enjoyed both novels a lot. By the time I read those books, The Queen of Nothing was already published, yet I have waited for the right edition to come out. Otherwise, my books would have different sizes and I am too perfectionistic to handle that. So, after a long wait, that truly felt like forever. I finally read the last book. What a book it was. Not as thrilling as the first two novels, yet I still enjoyed it a lot. Fewer plot twists and a bit more predictable, but Holly Black created a good ending for this fantastic series. The Folk of the Air series follows Jude, a human girl that was, together with her sisters, taken away from the human world by the fairy that murdered her parents. After years spending there, Jude got accustomed to this new world and the people. Always feeling weak, Jude had set her mind to become a knight and have a more important status. Especially because the fairy prince Cardan seemed to despise her. Fast forward and Jude has not become a knight, but after a lot of trouble married Cardan and became the Queen of fairy, yet after killing Cardan's brother, she was banished from Fairy. This is where Queen of Nothing picks up the story. Jude living with her sister and half-brother in the human world, but when her twin sister Taryn needs her help she returns to Fairy. Where she gets involved in the ongoing war, Cardan eventually gets cursed and Jude needs to fix it all. Jude is a powerful character with a strong motivation to become more powerful and independent from others. Yet, she also experiences love for the first time, even more, complicated than you can imagine. Holly Black finally gave us the scene we all have been waiting for, and yes I read it twice. Her writing is so nice, I really enjoyed the reading flow. However, unlike the first two books, here she went very fast. Sometimes too fast for my liking. I wish that she gave this book another 100 pages to make it more elaborate and because I just like the characters so much. Something else I could have gone without was the tail... It made me think of Sarah J. Maas and her 'thing' with wings (read my review of Maas' House of Earth and Blood here). I prefer fey that are more like humans in physique so without these extra features such as tails. But we are all different and it didn't bother me that much. But still, I could have gone without. (Source: blackholly.com) I really enjoyed reading this series, I would definitely recommend it to all fantasy lovers. Black gives her would and characters a fun twist and surprised me multiple times in her story, all in a good way. The characters all have great personalities and definitely, Cardan is really a favourite of mine. Jude too is a strong character that you see grow during the books. Holly Black is a great writer with already many books on her name, I am also interested in reading her Modern Faerie Tales series. But I am even more excited for the last instalment of the Folk of the Air series, How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories. This is a book that has Cardan as its main character and talks more about his life before the series. I am very excited for this book to come out, it is expected to be published on November 24, and I definitely will buy a copy! Not just for the story, but also for Black's writing style would I read this novel. I hope you liked this review, and that you are just as excited for Black's newest book to come out as I am. I will see you all soon. Keep reading, Julia Interested in The Folk of the Air series? You can buy the books here.
