You know the basic movement, but Chaturanga is a foundational yoga pose that can certainly use some breaking down. Chaturanga is often part of a “vinyasa” or “flow” that yogis do on the way back to Downward Dog. It can also make a cameo in advanced sun salutations. It is a transitional pose and one with the most common mistakes seen by teachers – often, students tend to skip the low pushup and move right through to Upward Facing Dog. Camel pose is such a good stretch and heart opener. Stretches shoulders, front of the body and quads. Great pose for everyone who sits a lot, runners, bicyclists, hikers. Being mindful of the neck is important here. Don’t just let go of the head, keep engagement in the neck, think of lengthening and tucking the chin slightly. I very often modify my poses when I feel tired at the end the practice and feel that I can’t hold the pose with proper alignment or in the beginning of the class when teacher gives and advanced pose without any prior warmup.
