an old brick kitchen with many dishes on the table
Medieval kitchen in Gainsborough Old Hall Manor in Lincolnshire, UK. Medieval kitchens were placed outside the Great Hall for fire safety. Spits roasting meat and large, iron cauldrons bubbling with soups and stews were all part of the kitchen's daily routine. Lambs, cattle, pigs, and fowl were tethered or penned nearby, some castles kept a pond stocked with fish, and cooking herbs would be grown in nearby gardens. Castle kitchens could be large enough to roast up to three whole oxen at a time!l

The staircases turned out to be the most frightening, because if anyone happened to be walking up or down them, there was nowhere they could hide. They tiptoed, as much as they could in their large leather boots, down the main staircase. Sophia tried not to rattle her metal pieces too much, which was not an easy task. With every move, every bend of her torso, the silver pieces knocked against one another disobediently and Sophia gasped a little bit every time it happened.

Brigandine, leather, paris, late 15th C
Brigandine, leather, Paris, late 1400's | Flickr. Unlike armour for the torso made from large plates, the brigandine was flexible, with a degree of movement between each of the overlapping plates. The rivets, or nails, attaching the plates to the fabric were often decorated, being gilt, or of latten, and sometimes embossed with a design. Medieval brigandines were essentially a refinement of the earlier coat of plates, which developed in the late 12th century.
