The last trophy heads cut off by Igorot headhunters was supposedly in the late 1970's. These fierce warriors who inhabit the Philippine Cordilleras also built the Banaue rice terraces. A panoramic vista of stairways of rice fields carved into the steep mountainside and reaching up to the skies. Constructed almost entirely by hand 2000 years ago.

The batek (tribal tattoos) are a lost art in Kalinga which the younger generation don’t get anymore. Tattoos are now associated with criminals and gangs (see my series about the gang tattoos here). Perhaps a deeper explanation why the Kalingas today do not persist in getting tattoos is the belief that the batek is hard-earned and reserved primarily for the “rightful persons”.
